Ethics of Field Recording
Before recording someone, settle the use, the credit and the chance to withdraw.

The problem
When recording in a street, a village or a ceremony, why does asking first matter more than explaining afterwards?
How it works
A field recording captures more than sound: it captures identity, place and situation. Before recording, explain the purpose, the reach and how the material will be stored, so consent is informed. Consent can be withdrawn, especially for voices that identify a person, such as singing, dialect or work songs. Credit and payment should be agreed in advance, not added after release. Traditional tunes are often treated as ownerless, yet specific singers, players and engineers are involved. When archive metadata stops at the county, later users cannot trace provenance.
Practice and settings
Prepare a short explanation covering use, platform and duration. Log the date, place, participants and the form of consent. Use a pseudonym or only a region for people who prefer not to be named. For ritual or religious material, ask whether it may be published at all. Store the licence and restrictions in metadata beside the audio. If someone changes their mind later, have a withdrawal and takedown process.
What to listen for
Hear your own recording and check the background for recognisable conversation or names. Hear singing and dialect and judge whether they identify one person. Hear ambience and check for private spaces captured by accident. Hear a work song and notice whether the call-and-response is preserved intact.
Common misconceptions
That public space means free recording; that traditional tunes have no rights holders; that changing a name completes anonymisation.
