Arranging Versus Composition

Composition fixes the skeleton, arrangement chooses the vehicle. Know which edits change identity.

The line between composition and arrangement is not workload but the nature of the change. Composition fixes pitch relationships, rhythmic skeleton and proportions. Arrangement decides who carries that material, in which register and with what texture. Separating the two tells you which edits alter the identity of a piece.

The problem

Treat every part as untouchable and arranging shrinks to orchestration. Change the melodic contour or harmonic skeleton while still calling it arranging, and collaborators misread the scope.

Texture or frequency band

The compositional layer is melody contour, bass motion, harmonic function and timing. The arranging layer is timbre, register, layer count, rhythmic pattern and section entries. Ask whether the theme remains recognisable after instruments and texture are replaced. If it does, the work is mainly arranging.

Approach

Write two lists. The material list records melody, bass, harmony and rhythmic pattern and marks what cannot change. The realisation list records timbre, register, texture and section plan. Keep the skeleton, then change the vehicle. If the skeleton itself changes, treat it as co-writing rather than arranging.

What to listen for

Compare Bach's organ original with the piano transcription and hear the pedal line move into the left hand. Then hear the piano version of the Gadfly Spanish Dance and notice which registers replace the orchestral colours.

Common misunderstandings

Arranging is not orchestration. Transposition or metre change may also touch composition. Judge by whether identity changes, not by note count.
