What it lets you finish

A demo gets a presentable drum part without writing every hit. The groove browser finds patterns by style and tempo, dragged in and edited. Tap2Find takes a tapped rhythm and returns close matches. Bandmate suggests kits from a reference track. Song Track lays out verses, choruses and fills. It can also serve as a live drum machine. Electronic drums can play parts live, and an ad can get a usable drum track within half an hour. Drum stems can be exported for mixing.

How it works

Sampled drums with built-in processing: each kit arrives with room, compression and EQ already shaping a finished sound. The core library is around fifteen gigabytes and usually loads in seconds; samples are layered by drum and velocity. MIDI grooves are organised by style, meter and complexity and can be transposed to the project, and a dragged groove keeps its velocities and ornaments. The mix preset can be swapped as a whole or per drum. Articulations use keyswitches, open hi-hat follows CC4, and electronic kits can be mapped. Multiple outputs separate kick, snare and room.

Limits and traps

The sound is already mixed: replacing a snare, adjusting bleed or rebuilding the room requires Superior Drummer 3. Microphone and leakage control are limited, which shows in detailed drum mixing. Grooves used as-is sound generic, so velocity and microtiming need editing or the part feels like a loop. Styles depend on EZX expansions, the core library is limited, core snare and cymbal choices are fewer than in the expansions, and each expansion takes a few gigabytes. Authorisation is account-bound, and resale must go through the vendor's transfer process. Electronic hi-hat and rim response are less detailed than on high-end modules. It does no drum replacement or pitch detection, so aligning an original recording needs another tool, and it should not be treated as a sampler. The interface is dense, which slows a first visit.
