What it lets you finish
- Build a synth bass that carries a track, with a stable low end and grip in the mids.
- Make leads and pads whose timbre changes over time through wavetable position and modulation.
- Import a sample or a hand-drawn shape as a wavetable and turn it into a moving texture.
- Produce short effects and transitions for games and film without another sample library.
- Reproduce the sound on stage or in another session, presets and modulation included.
How it works
A wavetable is an ordered set of single-cycle waveforms; as the oscillator scans the table, the harmonic structure moves from one shape to another. Serum makes wavetable position, detune, filtering and envelopes available as modulation destinations, and a matrix connects LFOs, envelopes and MIDI controls, with the routes drawn on screen. Beyond the wavetable oscillators there is noise and a sub, and the signal then passes through filters and an effects section. Tables can be drawn, generated by formula, or cut from audio as a single cycle. The sub tracks the fundamental rather than the wavetable, and that is what keeps the low end steady. The model is still subtractive: the waveform sets the harmonics, the filter removes them.
Limits and traps
- It cannot split a chord; importing audio takes a waveform, not a resynthesis.
- Polyphony, unison and effects raise CPU quickly, so freeze unused tracks while arranging.
- The preset library is large, and browsing tends to produce familiar sounds unrelated to the song.
- There is no standalone version; a show needs the session, the licence and the same build.
- Wavetable import is sensitive to cycle length and loop point; a poor cut brings clicks and pitch offset.
- Effects live inside the synth and travel with the preset, so they are awkward to replace with outboard processing at mixdown.
Alternatives and pairings
Vital is free and modulates in a similar way. Pigments offers more synthesis engines. Massive X leans toward bass and texture. Serum pairs naturally with a drum sampler: Serum owns the low end and the lead, the sampler owns the kit, and neither takes the other's CPU.
First three things to learn
Learn wavetable position against filtering, then how modulation routes are made, then the trade-offs of unison and effects. Read the pages on wavetable synthesis, software synths and the synthesizer alongside it.
