Percussion Arrangement
Set the kick and snare dialogue first, then decide where the gaps go.
Related
Percussion arranging decides the sense of time, not the volume. With the same kit, placing the snare on two and four rather than every beat changes how the bass and guitar accents are heard.
The problem
As the kit gets busier, every other instrument seems to slow down. Start by fixing which beat everyone shares, then decide where the remaining parts should yield.
Texture or frequency band
Low percussion occupies sixty to one hundred twenty hertz, the snare has energy around two hundred hertz and again between two and four kilohertz. Set the kick and snare dialogue first, then add cymbals and colour percussion. Keep low hits off the bass's beat; high percussion can be dense but needs accents.
Approach and judgement
Write the main loop, then choose which beat to leave open. A two-beat fill before the chorus works better than filling the whole bar. Keep the kick's landing points during fills and put change in snare and cymbals.
What to listen for
Compare a sixty-five BPM rock loop with a two-hundred-ninety BPM jazz loop and notice that the low end thins as events increase. In game battle music, percussion often holds a fixed low pulse while the highs vary.
Common misunderstandings
Denser percussion is not more energy. Density has to work with space in the low end, or it merely becomes noise.
