Leitmotif in Film

A short motive marks a character or a fate, and variation rather than new material carries the story.

A leitmotif is a short, recognisable piece: three notes, or only a rhythm. It is tied to a character when it first appears, and every return carries that history.

The problem

A two-hour film asks the audience to remember who is who and what comes. Explaining again slows the story; a motive is a memory cue that costs no dialogue. The difficulty is staying audible without repeating it.

Music and picture

A motive can change interval, orchestration, speed, mode, or keep only its rhythm. Wagner wove motives through music drama; cinema assigns one to a character, object or place. A motive is not a label. It changes with the plot: a heroic theme turning minor announces a fall.

Practice and judgement

Write two to four notes with a clear contour and interval. Give one to each main character, no more than five. Keep at least one feature when varying it, such as the rhythm or the first two notes. Cover the image and ask who is present.

What to listen for

In Peter and the Wolf, strings stand for Peter and horns for the wolf. Hear the violin theme return across Scheherazade, and the troll theme accelerate. The demo states a four-note cello motive, then transposes and thickens it; which version do you still recognise?

Common misunderstandings

A motive is not the whole score; much film music works through texture and atmosphere. It need not use the same instrument. A temp-track theme cannot simply become yours; change it until the source is no longer audible.
