Lead Sheets and Chord Symbols
One melody line plus chord symbols is enough for a band date, and it forces the player to choose the texture.

The problem
Jazz bands, wedding groups and ad-hoc studio line-ups rarely have time to rehearse a full score. A lead sheet gives one melody line and chord symbols and hands the arrangement to the players. Written clearly, the band plays it down once; written vaguely, everyone guesses.
How it works
Chord symbols combine a root with a quality, such as Cmaj7, Dm7 or G7alt. Extensions and alterations go in brackets, and a slash names an inversion or a required bass. A lead sheet usually carries melody, chords and section marks, while rhythm and texture follow from the style. The same symbol means different things in different idioms, so swing eighths and straight eighths must be stated. The more detail the sheet adds, the less freedom it leaves.
Settings and practice
Fix the key and form first and mark repeats and endings. Chord symbols should match the actual harmony rather than hiding passing chords behind simplifications. Use slash chords when a specific bass is needed. Put tempo and feel at the top. For singers, mark lyric placement and breaths. Keep live charts to one page where possible. Confirm that the band reads the symbols the same way before recording, and cut a reference take if needed.
What to listen for
On the lead-sheet version of the ballade theme, whether the melodic skeleton is still recognisable; on the gypsy tune, how ornaments differ when players supply them live; on the hymn chart, how inner voices get redistributed. A lead sheet is only as good as the room it leaves for judgement.
