What you have to hand over
A cover or a rework: decide first whether you are singing over the original arrangement or rebuilding it. If the original has a rap verse, decide whether to keep or rewrite it before the recording day, not on it. Deliver a stereo mix, an instrumental without voice, lead and harmony stems, and a note naming the original song, its writers and what you changed. If it is used in video or commercially, add the rights documents you have checked. Use 48 kHz and 24 bit, with the instrumental and the mix at equal length and the same start point.
Three steps
Set key and tempo first. Sing the original melody and find the key where the chorus is not a strain, then decide whether the tempo changes. Second, build the backing: follow the original harmonic path, or state clearly that the groove is new. Record the lead, stack harmonies, and leave room to breathe between sections. Third, mix and verify: voice forward, backing yielding, export the instrumental and stems, then confirm one by one who licenses the composition, the recording and the sync use, and which uses each licence covers.
Tools and pages
Any DAW will do. Read the site page Arranging Versus Composition first, then the glossary entry Mechanical License. Use a tempo tool to confirm the original BPM and a transpose plug-in to try keys, but let the unaided voice decide. A reference track is for style only; do not paste the original recording into the session. At release, submit the metadata and licence information the platform asks for, and pass the change note to collaborators.
Acceptance checks
The voice stays in tune and the chorus is not shouted. Instrumental and lead share length and start. The instrumental contains no vocal residue. You can list exactly what the arrangement changed: key, tempo, groove, instrumentation. Rights holder, scope and term appear in the delivery note. File names carry song, version and key. Writer and title spellings in the metadata are correct.
Why work gets sent back
The key is too high and the chorus is shouted. The backing copies the original without a licence. Only a mix is delivered, so the performance needs a new session. The vocal is tuned so flat that it sounds like a synth. Rights are unclear and the release is taken down. The original writer is missing from the metadata and royalties cannot be matched. The rework drifts so far that listeners cannot recognise the song, yet it is still promoted as a cover.
