How it works

The pattern is the smallest unit, and the playlist arranges patterns and audio clips into a structure; the channel rack is the list of sound sources and drums. The step sequencer places notes on a grid, the piano roll writes melody and chords, and both write into patterns. The mixer routes by channel, and sidechain compression is standard practice in electronic music. A slicing tool cuts audio into key-mapped pieces. Limits and traps

The pattern-and-playlist model differs from other DAWs; moving a project out means rethinking its structure.
Audio editing and comping are weaker than in Pro Tools or Cubase, so tracking a full band is not its strength.
There is no native AAF or OMF, so picture-post exchanges are audio stems only.
The macOS version does not host AU plug-ins, so AU-only processors are unavailable.
The interface is dense and tutorials vary in quality; motions are easy to learn without the reasons.
Project compatibility depends on version, so back up older projects before opening them in a newer release.
Mixing is adequate, but housekeeping on big sessions and picture hit-points lag behind scoring-oriented DAWs.

Alternatives and pairings

For recording and mixing, Pro Tools or Studio One is smoother. For firing clips on stage, Ableton Live is more mature. For modular sound design, Bitwig goes further. Pair it with any VST synth, drum machine and MIDI controller; send vocals to a dedicated tuning tool.
