Feature lists have converged. What separates DAWs is the editing model: whether it assumes you start from a loop or from a recorded timeline. Settle the workflow first, then look at software.

What you are deciding

Three things. How material arrives decides recording, step entry or loops. How the project changes decides a linear timeline, a clip grid or a score. How the result leaves decides picture, parts or a stage. Write those three as one sentence and half the options disappear.

The decision table

For songs built from loops and scenes, Ableton Live's Session view, Bitwig Studio's modular devices, FL Studio's patterns and step sequencer. For multitrack recording and comping, Pro Tools playlists, Studio One's drag-and-drop and chord track, Cubase's VST handling and expression. For picture and timecode, Cubase's video track, Logic Pro's scoring tools, Pro Tools for post exchange. For the stage, clip firing in Ableton Live or scenes in Bitwig Studio. When the score leads, write in Dorico or Sibelius and keep the DAW for audio.

Three cases

A bedroom electronic track: one laptop and headphones, build an eight-bar loop in Ableton Live, fix drums and bass, then add harmony; the test is whether the loop survives two minutes. A band session: Pro Tools or Studio One, set 48 kHz and buffer size, track the kit, then comp; the test is that no edit is audible. A short film: Cubase plus Dorico or Sibelius, build the tempo map before the theme; the test is that cuts and accents land together.

Limits and traps

How to start

Spend one week on four real tasks: an eight-bar loop, a multitrack comp, thirty seconds of picture, and one rehearsal. Pick the host that made the most of them natural, and bend it for the rest. Read Comparing DAWs and Digital Audio Workstation alongside.
