A budget is not a single purchase. The software is the first payment; upgrades, sounds, plug-ins and cloud services follow. Put three years on one ledger and the difference between free, education, subscription and perpetual becomes visible.
What you are deciding
Separate one-off spending from recurring spending. Then read the licence: whether an education copy allows commercial work, whether it upgrades, and what happens after graduation or leaving a job. Finally count time: money saved on a free option is often paid back in learning and compatibility.
The decision table
With no budget, write scores in MuseScore, make audio in GarageBand or Waveform Free, and use the free entry tier of Pro Tools when post work has to be learned. For education, take Logic Pro through an Apple education bundle, or the education licences of Ableton Live and Cubase. Long subscriptions suit jobs that need constant updates and industry exchange, such as Pro Tools and Audition. Perpetual licences suit a fixed workflow kept for years, such as Cubase, Studio One, FL Studio, Bitwig Studio, REAPER and Dorico. Usage-based terms suit game middleware, where Wwise and FMOD tier by project scale.
Three cases
A student room: start with GarageBand on a Mac, add MuseScore for scores, and buy nothing for a semester. A semi-pro freelancer: buy Logic Pro or Cubase outright, use stock plug-ins first, and add one reverb and one repair tool once income is steady. A post job: a Pro Tools subscription is the entry ticket to exchange, with Audition or RX handling dialogue.
Limits and traps
- Education licences are usually personal and non-commercial, and must be replaced after graduation or leaving.
- Free tiers often cap track count, export formats or plug-in formats, which you discover halfway through.
- Over three years a subscription usually costs more than a perpetual licence, but perpetual licences charge for major upgrades.
- Bundles invite overbuying; wait three months before adding anything.
- Prices and terms shift by region and time; check the official page before paying.
How to start
Write a three-year ledger: software, upgrades, sounds, plug-ins, cloud. Then finish one short piece entirely inside the free option, and decide whether what was missing was a feature or experience. Read Comparing DAWs and Plug-in Formats alongside.
