The Brass Choir
Brass writing turns on breath, the harmonic series and the precision of unison.

The problem
Brass changes volume and colour enormously with dynamics. The same horn can blend into woodwind at a soft level and overpower a whole string section at a loud one. The first decision in brass writing is which dynamic level the music needs.
Instrument combination
The horn is soft and blends most easily with woodwind and strings. The trumpet is bright and carries signals and peaks. The trombone is solemn and can slide. The tuba holds the bass. In a four-part group, spread the registers rather than crowding the middle-high range. Brass needs rest; unbroken high playing costs players control.
Register and masking
Brass tutti energy sits in the middle-high range and easily covers woodwind. A horn in the middle register can overlap bassoon and cello; a trumpet high up becomes foreground. Leaving rests for the brass is more effective than keeping it playing throughout.
What to listen for
In Fanfare for the Common Man, hear the dialogue between brass and timpani and the weight of the tutti. In the four-trumpet arrangement of Procession of the Nobles, hear how one family divides its registers. In the orchestral arrangement of Vierne's First Symphony, hear brass make itself heard against organ and strings.
Common misconceptions
The belief that louder brass is more impressive misses the point. Short phrases, soft playing and precise entries carry far more authority; constant fortissimo only tires the ear.
