Bass Line Design
A bass line shapes harmony and rhythmic weight, not just a list of roots.
Related
A bass line is not a list of chord roots. It shapes harmonic direction and rhythmic weight, while many arrangements feel loose because the bass merely marks a root on every beat.
The problem
When the bass only stamps roots, other parts must explain the harmony, and section changes arrive abruptly. The bass needs to point one step ahead.
Texture or frequency band
The bass is strongest between roughly forty and one hundred twenty hertz. Its rhythm can be simpler than the drums, yet it should announce change earlier. Use passing notes before a chord change and approach the next root by step at a phrase end.
Approach and judgement
Write the landing points on beats one and three first, then decide what fills the middle. A pedal suits stable sections, stepwise motion drives, and leaps emphasise. Bass and kick need not coincide, so let the kick fall where the bass is silent and both become clearer.
What to listen for
In a string quartet, notice how the cello fills the melody's breathing space with a short phrase. In organ music, the pedal often changes a half beat before the manuals.
Common misunderstandings
A busier bass is not a steadier one. A bass that never stops can make harmonic change impossible to hear.
