The Limits of AI Mastering
Automatic mastering can match loudness and tone; it cannot repair a mix or a structure.

It handles the last stage, not the first
Hand an automatic service a mix whose balance already works and it returns, within minutes, a version at a similar loudness with a brighter tone. Hand it a mix with a muddy low end, a buried vocal and flat sections, and it enlarges every one of those faults. Automatic mastering works on overall tone and level, not on arrangement, performance or mix decisions.
What it can and cannot do
| Task | Automatic | Still human |
|---|---|---|
| Loudness and peaks | Pull toward a reference LUFS and limit true peak | Decide how loud this song should be |
| Overall tone | Match the reference's spectral tilt | Decide whether the reference fits |
| Dynamics | Light compression and peak control | Preserve quiet playing and section shape |
| Mono and phase | Report or lightly correct | Fix real cancellation |
| Balance between parts | Largely untouched | Choose between vocal and accompaniment |
| Versions and delivery | Export a fixed format | DDP, vinyl and alternate versions |
The last row is the one most often missed. Automatic services usually return a WAV; DDP, ISRC metadata and vinyl cutting margin remain separate jobs.
A trial you can verify
Prepare a 24-bit mix with 6 dB of headroom and do not limit it first. Choose two references in the same genre, and match loudness before comparing tone, or the louder version will always seem better. After export, do four things: measure integrated LUFS and true peak; listen in mono for vocal and low end; hunt for pumping and distortion on drums, cymbals and sibilance; switch between the processed and untreated files at matched level. If one of the four fails, do not sign off.
When a person must take over
- The mix itself has low-end build-up, a masked vocal or phase trouble
- An album needs a relationship of loudness and tone across tracks
- Dynamics are part of the work, as in classical, jazz or score
- Vinyl, DDP, stems or a specific delivery format is required
- The reference does not match the genre, or is itself too loud
- The client wants every change explained
How it fails
The classic failure is not ugliness but sameness: ten songs pulled to one loudness and one brightness, and the album loses its shape. The second is a limiter pumping through dense sections, so the whole track drops when the bass enters. The third is high end pushed until cymbals turn brittle and sibilants sting, which wins a short A/B and tires the ear over time. The fourth is a compliant file of the wrong version: a streaming master delivered when the client asked for CD.
